The Liberal Studies major prepares individuals to be future teachers, primarily at the elementary level. The Liberal Studies Department is located in Building 25, Room 125B. Liberal Studies Academic Advisors
Both the Mustang Success Center (Freshmen) and the College of Science and Mathematics Student Services Center (Sophomores - Seniors) provide academic advising services for students. Academic advisors help students plan classes, complete course substitutions, make sure they are on track to graduate on time, and more. If you are a Freshman, make an appointment with the Mustang Success Center at https://success.calpoly.edu. If you are a Sophomore - Senior, make an appointment with the CSM Student Services Center at https://csmadvising.calpoly.edu.
Credit/No Credit Policy
The Liberal Studies allows a maximum of 4 units toward major/support area and a maximum of 4 units toward GE courses.
Courses that are listed in both the GE and major/support (like GEOG 308) count for both areas and if taken as CR/NR, it will meet all units allowed.

Information for LS Majors Applying to the Multiple Subject Credential Program at Cal Poly:
You are eligible to complete the Step A packet (acceptance into the Multiple Subject Credential Program will allow you to complete the Education method (EDUC 430, 431, 435, 436) courses needed for the major and the teaching credential) once you are within 3-4 quarters of graduating. If you are not planning to complete your credential here, see an advisor.
It is required that you attend a Step A meeting to learn how to appropriately complete your packet. This should ideally be done the quarter PRIOR to submitting your Step A packet. For more information on the Step A process, please visit the School of Education website. CSM Advising Staff can only assist you in completing the Study Plan, Change of Degree and Emphasis Area. For all other questions regarding the Step A process, please contact the School of Education by emailing: soe@calpoly.edu or by calling their office at 805-756-2126.
Students can submit Step A packet beginning the first day of school. The deadline to submit your STEP A packet to the Credential Office (Building 2) is Monday of the 4th week of the quarter by 4:30 pm. No late packets will be considered.
